Joy of Contras (Newcomer Workshop) 1pm - 2:30pm - FREE! Learn what makes contra dancing so much fun! Our out of town instructor Nora ScoƩ will make it easy to learn how to swing and be able to dance all the other moves that make up contras. For those who know how to contra dance, this session is great review of why you love to dance! No partners are necessary and all are welcome. Best of all it is free! Becket Through the Ages - Advanced Workshop - 3pm - 4:30pm - Only $5 or $10 with dance admission Here's an unique opportunity to see how the Becket formaƟon has evolved over the 60 years that it has been used in contra dances. This workshop will allow us the Ɵme to dance a bunch of interesƟng and challenging contras in a formaƟon in which you are next to your partner rather than across. Those who are new to contras are welcome so long as they have parƟcipated in the Joy of Contras workshop. Potluck Dinner - 5:00 - 6:45pm We will provide roast chicken, water, and plates, utensils and napkins. Please bring a dish to share and RSVP so we will be sure to have enough chicken, chairs and tables set up. Dance! 7 - 10pm - $8 adults; $5 Students & folks over 62; Free for kids under 12 We will start the first 15-30 minutes with a newcomer's lesson, so if you weren't able to make it to the workshop, you can sƟll feel encouraged to join us! Penn Fix is our instructor/caller for the evening. Penn lives in Spokane and first learned to contra dance in New England during the height of the 1970s contra revival. Returning home in 1980, Penn helped to establish contra dancing throughout the Northwest. He is known for his teaching skills as well as a dance repertoire that includes not only his own composiƟons but those from across the country. His dances are peppered with humor and historical context. He is the founder of the Lady of the Lake music and dance camps on Lake Coeur d'Alene, as well as a two term board member of the American Folklife Center in Washington, DC. He has called for dances and dance week and weekends throughout the country. Arvid Lundin and Deep Roots is our band for these awesome events. Arvid leads the band playing high energy, tradiƟonal and original tunes. Dave Beach plays lightning fast mandolin and hard-driving rhythm guitar while Char Beach adds her skill on the harp and bodhran. Cherie Bronstein sets a great beat with her bass. With a mix of CelƟc, Scandinavian, North American roots music , they'll have us dancing the night away.
