Volunteer: TBMMC Communities in the Schools 2019-2020

The Communities in the Schools program works with elementary school students for dropout prevention.  Yes, that's right, the notion is to start early to make sure that students don't fall behind.  Because if they do fall behind early, it is hard to catch up later and can lead to frustration or inability to complete high school.  TBMMC is working with Communities in the Schools at Sacajawea Elementary to do math tutoring.  Volunteers are connected with a teacher and will set up a time during the school day  to work with students on math skills on a weekly basis.

Volunteer: Math Coaches and Mentors

Math is a key underpinning for many careers, particularly science and engineering. It is important not only to understand the mathematical concepts, but also how to solve problems and apply knowledge to new situations. The objective of this Team Battelle project is to increase the interest in (and comfort with) math amongst elementary/middle school students. One of the factors related to student involvement with math is the availability of a mentor/coach to lead activities. This project is looking to capitalize on the wealth of technically adept people that Battelle attracts and have Battelle volunteers fill the role of math mentors, thereby providing a venue to foster comfort/interest and excitement about math through tutoring, enrichment activities that go beyond standard classroom topics, and/or participation in math competitions. You can participate regardless of your skill level at math, this is really about giving students an opportunity.
