Volunteer: MISSION ACCEPTING DONATIONS!Did you know the Mission is accepting donations? We are! Beyond food and money, we're also now accepting clothing, hygiene supplies, toys, not furniture - but small household items, sheets for twin beds, and shoes. Running the Mission is very similar to running your own home, except on a much bigger scale. Just think of all the things you need for your family. We need those sames things to keep the Mission operating smoothly. So if you need it at your house, most likely we need it here, and you can be a huge blessing to us by donating those items. We also have a list of "Urgent Needs" which we update as our needs change throughout the year. Please bring all donations to the Men's Facility, which is located at 221 S 4th Avenue, Pasco, WA 99301. Donation drop off is located on the 3rd Ave side of property, right behind the Thunderbird Motel. The donation attendant will open the gate and help unload your donations.

Volunteer: Skills That Shine Mentorship: Launch Washington Students into Washington JobsThe Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) is recruiting mentors who will support local WA college students going into STEM careers here in WA. Mentees are from underrepresented backgrounds – 70% of Opportunity Scholars are first-generation college students, identify as persons of color and 60% are women. WSOS strongly encourages volunteers from underrepresented backgrounds to mentor who can relate to a Scholar’s lived experience. It is a 6-8 hour commitment for the entire school year (October – May) and the structured, virtual program focuses on students gaining professional development skills and confidence. Mentors can be at any level or in any role – the main requirement is that you’re willing to share your own career journey. Sign up by clicking the "Respond" button on this site, then going to https://www.waopportunityscholarship.org/sts/ SKILLS THAT SHINE MENTORSHIP: LAUNCH WASHINGTON STUDENTS INTO WASHINGTON JOBS Washington state is facing a talent crisis. There are more trade, health care and STEM jobs than we can fill, yet only 40 percent of Washington high school students earn a post-secondary credential that’s needed to fill these jobs. The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS) was created to address this talent gap. WSOS is a public-private partnership that launches Washington students into high-demand Washington jobs by providing financial support to college students as well as mentorship along the way. More than 20,000 Scholars will be supported by 2025. WHY: Opportunity Scholars are highly motivated to make a strong contribution to their future employers, but many lack the coaching or connections that are pivotal to landing a job. That’s where mentors come in. The Skills that Shine (StS) program leverages mentorship to enhance Scholars’ career readiness skills and network, ensuring a smoother transition from college to career. WHO: Mentors range from recent Scholar alumni to seasoned professionals and retirees. Mentors are engineers, scientists, nurses, marketing professionals, recruiters and everything in between. All we ask is that mentors are compassionate volunteers, have experience in the STEM or health care industry and are willing to share advice about their career journey. Mentees are third-year Scholars pursuing baccalaureate STEM or health care degrees and are eager to learn from caring professionals. HOW: WSOS provides mentors with resources, training and support to jump-start the relationship. First, mentors create a profile on the WSOS matching platform (takes ~5 minutes) and then receive their Mentor Toolkit. In October, mentees login to the platform, select their own mentor and initiate the first meeting via email. During the academic year, mentorship pairs use an online course to work on topics such as building a strong resume and cover letter, mock interviewing and developing a LinkedIn profile and network. The program is flexible; mentors and mentees can connect virtually or in person. COMMITMENT: The StS program requires just six to eight hours of volunteer time during the entire academic year. The lift is light, but the impact is tremendous in the lives of Scholars. WSOS is recruiting mentors to volunteer for the 2020-21 school year. Volunteer: Community Science & Technology Seminar SeriesPNNL's Community Science and Technology Seminar Series was launched to help the public better understand and explore how science transforms our world. It is also a great opportunity to engage with the community to educate them on the world-class research and development taking place at the area's largest employer, and to reinforce our commitment to the community. Talks are non-technical and run about 45 minutes plus Q&A. While the format of the talks is a presentation style, we like seminars to be interactive, so any hands-on displays or examples you can bring are encouraged. These typically take place at the Mid-Columbia Library in Kennewick and the Richland Public Library.
Seminars run September through May and usually take place at the Richland Public Library or the Kennewick Branch of the Mid-Columbia Libraries. If you are interested in participating in the Community Science & Technology Seminar Series, we will work with you to ensure your talk is at the appropriate level for a non-technical audience and coordinate your speaking engagement with the libraries.

Volunteer: Math Coaches and MentorsMath is a key underpinning for many careers, particularly science and engineering. It is important not only to understand the mathematical concepts, but also how to solve problems and apply knowledge to new situations. The objective of this
Team Battelle project is to increase the interest in (and comfort with) math amongst elementary/middle school students. One of the factors related to student involvement with math is the availability of a mentor/coach to lead activities. This project is looking to capitalize on the wealth of technically adept people that Battelle attracts and have Battelle volunteers fill the role of math mentors, thereby providing a venue to foster comfort/interest and excitement about math through tutoring, enrichment activities that go beyond standard classroom topics, and/or participation in math competitions. You can participate regardless of your skill level at math, this is really about giving students an opportunity.
